Getting a prescription in Spain as a tourist or expat

One of the most common reasons people contact a doctor while in Spain is medication: they’ve run out, forgotten it at home, or need an ongoing treatment renewed. If you’re not in the Spanish public system, the route is a private prescription — and it’s simpler than most visitors expect.

What is REMPE?

REMPE is Spain’s official electronic private-prescription system. After a consultation, the doctor issues your prescription digitally and you receive a PDF with a code. Any pharmacy in Spain scans that code and dispenses your medication — no paper original, no need to visit a clinic. It’s the same secure system used for private prescriptions nationwide.

What can be prescribed online

Many routine, non-controlled medications can be prescribed or renewed after an online consultation, including:

  • Antihypertensives, statins and other long-term medication for known conditions.
  • Common antidepressants and prostate medication.
  • Antibiotics and treatments for common infections, where clinically appropriate.
  • Weight-loss injectables (e.g. GLP-1) when supported by a current prescription.

What cannot be prescribed online

For safety and legal reasons, controlled medications are never prescribed online: opioids (including tramadol and codeine), benzodiazepines, sleeping pills and stimulants. Also, paying for a consultation does not guarantee a prescription — if it isn’t clinically justified, the doctor will explain why and suggest the right alternative.

How to get yours

The process is quick: complete a short form describing what you need, have a brief video or WhatsApp consultation, and receive your REMPE prescription by email. Then walk into any Spanish pharmacy, show the code, and collect your medication. The whole thing can often be done the same day.
