UTI on holiday: when an online consultation is enough
Few things derail a trip like the sudden burning and urgency of a urinary tract infection (UTI). The reassuring part: for most simple cases, you don’t need to spend hours in A&E. Here’s how to tell whether an online consultation is the right call — and when it isn’t.
When online treatment is appropriate
For mild to moderate, uncomplicated urinary symptoms — the classic burning when you pee, needing to go often, and a feeling of urgency — an online consultation is usually enough. The doctor reviews your symptoms and history and, where appropriate, issues a REMPE prescription for an antibiotic that you collect at any Spanish pharmacy. It’s fast, private, and you stay in your hotel or apartment to rest.
Red flags that need in-person care
Some symptoms suggest a more serious infection that needs a physical exam, urine test, or both. See a doctor in person (or go to A&E) if you have:
- Fever, chills or shivering.
- Pain in your back or side (flank), not just when urinating.
- Blood in the urine, or symptoms that keep coming back.
- You are pregnant, or the symptoms are severe or worsening quickly.
How the consultation works
You describe your symptoms in a short pre-consultation form, book a slot — often the same day — and speak to the doctor by video or WhatsApp. If your case fits safe online treatment, your prescription is emailed to you. If it doesn’t, the doctor tells you straight away and points you to the right in-person care, so you’re never left guessing.
A note on antibiotics
Antibiotics are prescribed only when clinically justified — overusing them is bad for you and for everyone. Booking a consultation doesn’t guarantee a prescription; it guarantees a proper assessment and clear advice on what your symptoms need, which is exactly what good care looks like.
